It is alleged that the first capital, Gibixhegu, was set up in Esigodini, near Falcon College in 1838 by induna uGundwane Ndiweni. King Mzilikazi and some warriors had travelled via Botswana and did not show up for 2 years. So it was decided ukugiba ixhegu uMzilikazi and make Nkulumane the new king. The Esigodini area was partially inhabited by amaNgwane (Swati) who had fled during Mfecane under Zwangendaba and Queen Nyamazana Dlamini /Hlobiso Xaba . This gave rise to the name ‘Umuzi wamaNgwane' (Mzingwane) as the district is named.
