“The earthly counterpart of the sun”. Selected gold objects from the Ashanti Empire, 18th to 19th century, Ghana.

Through mining, tribute from vassal states and outright war, the Ashanti massed a large amount of gold, worked by the artisans of the empire into a variety of forms. Among the most famous gold objects from the Ashanti nation are the Golden Stool (a topic for a later post), “akrafokonmu” or soul washer’s disks, Worosa heads, the gold leaf covered hilts and pommels of state swords (afena) and linguist staffs, as well as jewelries, both ornamental pieces as well as those steeped in symbolic meaning.
