The Fulani are a nomadic people who make up about 20% of the population of The Gambia. They are the second largest ethnic group in The Gambia, making up 18% of the overall population.
Fulani, Fula, and Fulbe are various names for the same ethnic group that may be found all over Africa and are estimated to number around 40 million people.
Written records imply that the Fulani spread from West Africa, from Lake Chad in the east to the Atlantic coast, despite some historians' speculation that the Fulani originated in ancient Egypt or the Upper Nile region.
The countries of Nigeria, Mali, Niger, Guinea, Cameroon, and Senegal have the highest populations.
