The Ndebele people, also known as the Matabele, are a tribe that originated in Central Africa and are now predominantly located in the northeastern provinces of South Africa. Their rich cultural heritage is renowned for its colorful artwork, intricate beadwork, and vibrant traditional attire.
The Ndebele people trace their ancestry to the Zulu tribe, who were led by Shaka Zulu in the early 19th century.
Under Shaka Zulu's leadership, the Zulu tribe expanded its territory and absorbed smaller tribes, including the Ndebele. In the early 1800s, following a succession dispute, the Ndebele split from the Zulu and migrated north under the leadership of Mzilikazi, establishing the Matabele Kingdom in what is now Zimbabwe.
In the mid-19th century, the Ndebele faced pressure from European colonists, particularly Cecil Rhodes' British South Africa Company, who sought to expand their control over southern Africa.
In 1881, the Ndebele were defeated by Rhodes' forces and were forced to cede their territory in Zimbabwe. Many Ndebele subsequently migrated south into what is now South Africa, where they settled in the eastern Transvaal region and established the Ndebele people of South Africa.
Despite their tumultuous history, the Ndebele have maintained their unique cultural traditions and identity.
