The sap is then allowed to ferment naturally, which can take anywhere from a few hours to several days, depending on the climate and the type of palm tree used. The result is a slightly sweet and tangy beverage that can range in alcohol content from 3% to 5%.

African palm wine is typically consumed straight from the calabash, often with a straw to filter out any impurities. The drink is also sometimes used in cooking, especially in sauces and soups.

In many African cultures, palm wine is considered an important part of traditional ceremonies and rituals, such as weddings and naming ceremonies.
