A Story Worth Your Time.
One morning, old Laura woke up and found her beloved cat lying injured under the tree in her yard. The poor cat was howling from pain, and she could see that there was blood trickling down from it's mouth.
Old Laura was shocked and dismayed by what she saw. What could have happened to her cat? Was it attacked by a wild animal? Did someone intentionally hurt it? Who could have done this? All of these thoughts raced through her head in a split second.
Suddenly, old Laura thought about her foul-tempered and mean old neighbour who lived next door. She went to him and asked,
"My cat was seriously hurt by someone or something. Do you happen to know anything about it?"
The old man raged and snarled at her,
"I did it! Your little parasite came to my property! It has no right trespassing here! I had to teach it a lesson!"
Old Laura was completely taken aback by what she heard. However, instead of arguing with the grumpy old man, she simply turned and walked away. She then picked her injured cat up and took it to the veterinarian who had it treated. After a few weeks, her cat was nursed back to health.
One day, just two months after that incident, the old man's dog found it's way into old Laura's yard. Her grandson saw it and quickly ran to her, exclaiming,
"Grandma Laura, the neighbour's dog is in our yard. Remember what he did to our cat, let's do the same! Let's hurt it! It's trespassing too!"
However, old Laura shook her head abruptly and told her grandson to let the dog be. She said it was not necessary to take revenge. Surprised, her grandson asked,
"This is our chance to get even with that evil old man. Why don't you want revenge?"
Old Laura paused for a moment, then asked,
"Answer me this: when a fruit becomes rotten on a tree, what happens to it?"
Her grandson answered,
"It falls by itself."
Old Laura then smiled and said,
"Exactly! A rotten fruit will surely fall by itself. You know who the best human being is? Someone who has the ability to take revenge, but still doesn't take it. I know it is very tempting to take revenge, but after that, what? You will have to plan more for the future consequences. Your peace of mind is at stake. Karma and the universe know how to deliver their lessons, so It is important that we avoid taking revenge, and let the rotten fruits fall by themselves."
There is this famous saying "before seeking revenge, first dig two graves." When we try to hurt someone who has hurt us, we hurt ourselves too. We tend to feel the same amount of misery. It may feel comfortable for a moment, but it has disastrous consequences in long term. Rest and leave it all on karma. It might take time, but karma takes the best form of revenge. A rotten fruit will definitely fall by itself.
